The Northwest Territories school sport community is celebrating a proud moment, as Tobi Taylor of Yellowknife Catholic Schools has been recognized with the PHE Canada Impact Award.
This national honour recognizes individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to Physical and Health Education through innovative practice and meaningful impact. Tobi is the first educator from the Northwest Territories to receive this recognition, a reflection of her leadership and the lasting influence she has on students and communities across the territory.
Since 1998, Tobi has been a consistent presence in school sport and physical education in the NWT. A graduate of Acadia University and former varsity basketball player, she brings both athletic experience and a deep understanding of teaching into her work. At École St. Patrick High School, she has built an environment where students of all abilities feel welcome, supported, and encouraged to participate.
Her approach is simple and powerful. Show up. Create space. Encourage growth.
Whether it is through basketball, track and field, or expanding school-based programs like the Irish Sports Academy, Tobi leads by example. She is often seen stepping outside her own comfort zone alongside her students, reinforcing that learning and growth happen together.
Her impact extends well beyond physical skills. Tobi creates a space where students build confidence, develop self-belief, and feel a sense of belonging. These are the moments that stay with young people long after they leave school.
Those closest to her work see it every day.
“Thank you for helping me find confidence in myself.”
“Thank you for always being there when I needed someone to talk to.”
“Thank you for all the amazing life lessons.”
“Thank you for lighting my world every day.”
These words from her students speak to the environment she has created and the relationships she has built.
“Tobi exemplifies the very best of education,” shared Kathleen Finnigan, Principal at École St. Patrick High School. “She creates safe, welcoming spaces where students are empowered to be their authentic selves. Her passion, compassion, and courage inspire everyone around her.”
For NT School Sports, this recognition is more than an individual achievement. It reflects the strength of school sport across the North, where educators, coaches, and leaders continue to create meaningful opportunities for youth through movement.
Tobi Taylor’s work is a reminder that sport is not only about performance. It is about connection, confidence, and community.
And in that, her impact continues to grow.
