Safety first. Spirit still strong. We really wanted this to happen.
Ever since Fort Providence returned from evacuation, there was hope. Organizers, coaches, students, and communities were ready to make it work. Everyone could feel the momentum.
But yesterday, the road to Yellowknife was closed again because of fire and smoke. For the second time since the event was confirmed, travel was cut off. The school consulted with the fire department, and even though we were optimistic, the truth is: there are still too many risks. Fires are not fully out. Hot spots remain near the running trails. The safety of students, coaches, and chaperones must always come first.
So, with a heavy heart, the decision has been made to cancel the 2025 Cross Country Running Championships.
It’s disappointing, we know that. But this doesn’t take away from the energy and effort everyone poured in. From training runs and team meetings to logistics and travel prep, it was clear: this event mattered. We want to thank everyone, especially the Fort Providence team, for your dedication, patience, and understanding during such an unpredictable time.
The land will welcome us again when it’s safe. Until then, keep moving, keep training, and keep that cross country spirit alive.
