Setting the Tone for Respect
Why It Matters?
The Fair Play Pledge is a simple but powerful way to remind everyone, athletes, coaches, referees, and spectators, that good behaviour is the foundation of great sport.
Having 1–2 athletes read this pledge aloud at the start of each tournament helps reinforce the values of respect, kindness, inclusion, and sportsmanship. It sets a shared understanding and creates the tone for the entire event.
When to Do It?
- During the Opening Ceremony or first team gathering
- Just before the first game begins, with all participants present
- For larger tournaments, repeat it at each age group’s start time
How to Do It
- Choose 1–2 athletes (from different teams if possible) to read the pledge
- Let them practice for a few minutes beforehand
- Ask everyone to stand during the reading
- Keep it brief and focused, a moment of attention and respect
- Suggested intro from the MC or organizer: “Before we begin, we’d like to start this tournament with a Fair Play Pledge to remind us all of what matters most: respect, effort, and community.”
The Fair Play Pledge
“On behalf of all athletes, coaches, and supporters,
we pledge to play fair, to play hard, and to play with respect.
We will support each other, cheer with kindness,
and treat opponents, officials, and teammates with dignity.
We know that how we act is just as important as how we play.
Together, let’s make this event safe, fun, and full of good sportsmanship.
Let the games begin, with respect, pride, and heart.”
