NT School Sports Launches Youth Engagement Initiative to Empower Girls Through Sport

NT School Sports is excited to launch the Youth Engagement Initiative, offering two $500 grants to support student-led projects that empower girls and young women through sport and physical activity across the Northwest Territories.

Made possible through the support of Canadian Women & Sport, this initiative encourages students to develop creative projects that promote leadership, inclusion, body confidence, and participation in school-based sport and movement.

Who Can Apply?

Applications are open to:
• Students or student teams in NWT schools (Grades 7 to 12 preferred)
• Projects supported by a teacher or community mentor
• Initiatives focused on girls and young women

Project Ideas

Original ideas are welcome. Students are encouraged to design projects that meet the needs of their school or community. Ideas include:
• A school campaign promoting body confidence in sport
• A girls-only activity club, such as yoga, dance, or lunchtime sports
• A mentorship program connecting older and younger girls
• A photo or art exhibit celebrating girls in sport
• An inclusive sportswear initiative
• A “Train Like a Girl” challenge week

Grant Funding

Each successful project will receive $500, which may be used for:
• Equipment and supplies
• Printing and promotional materials
• Facility rental
• Guest speakers or facilitators
• Snacks and refreshments
• Small incentives or prizes
• Honorariums for mentors or volunteers
• Even a pizza lunch!

Application Deadline: September 30, 2026
Projects Completed By: May 30, 2027

• Your project idea
• Students, teachers, and mentors involved
• Target audience
• Proposed budget
• Project timeline

After completing your project, participants are asked to submit a final report using the project report form.
