A New School Sport Season Kicks Off in Hay River

A new school year means a new season of school sport across the Northwest Territories, and it all begins on the soccer fields in Hay River. The 2026 Aurora Ford Outdoor Soccer Tournament will take place September 18 to 20, bringing students, coaches, schools and communities together for the first Northwest Territories School Sports event of the 2026/2027 school year.

Hosted by Diamond Jenness Secondary School and Princess Alexandra School, the annual tournament has become a great way to kick off another year of school sport, with a weekend built around competition, teamwork and school spirit.

Students from Grades 4 through 12 will take to the fields, with six divisions ranging from Grade 4/5 and Grade 6/7 coed soccer through Junior and Senior Boys and Girls divisions. Games will be played at the Princess Alexandra and Diamond Jenness fields.

For NT School Sports, however, the weekend is about much more than the final score.

School sport creates opportunities for students from across the NWT to represent their schools, meet students from other communities, develop as athletes and leaders, and create memories with their teammates. The Aurora Ford Soccer Tournament is the first opportunity this year to bring that community back together.

A big thank you goes to Philippe Goguen, Jason Morrissey, Peter Beaton, who are coordinating this year’s tournament, along with the staff, volunteers, officials, coaches and communities who make an event like this possible. We also want to recognize Aurora Ford for its continued support of school sport and opportunities for young people in the Northwest Territories.
