FIFA Brings ‘Football for Schools’ to the Northwest Territories

Yellowknife has become the first city in Canada to host FIFA’s Football for Schools program, a global initiative now reaching more than 100 countries. The launch brought 2,000 soccer balls and a powerful message: sport belongs in every classroom.

Ten educators from across the NWT completed a two-day course led by FIFA facilitators. These teachers will now bring the program into their own schools and train others to integrate soccer and life skills into the curriculum.

“It’s not just about soccer skills,” said Yellowknife teacher Brooks Skyers. “It’s about teamwork, perseverance, and helping students develop confidence on and off the field.”

Andrew Gilmour, Executive Director of NT School Sports, called it a “wonderful partnership” with NWT Soccer and hopes it opens doors for more sport collaborations in the territory.

With programs like this, and thousands of soccer balls now in schools, the goal is simple: get more kids playing, learning, and growing, through the power of sport.
