Safe, Supported, and Spirit-Filled School Sport Across the North
Every year, hundreds of students across the Northwest Territories come together through NTSSA sanctioned events, from Cager to Cross Country, Super Soccer to Spike It. These are more than just tournaments. They are moments of connection, pride, and shared experience made possible through a trusted framework of safety, support, and collaboration.
What Makes an Event Sanctioned?
A sanctioned event means it has been officially reviewed and approved by NTSSA. It meets clear standards for safety, organization, inclusion, and quality, ensuring a great experience for all athletes, coaches, and communities involved.
Whether you’re a teacher, student, volunteer, or sport leader, knowing an event is sanctioned means knowing you’re part of something reliable, structured, and recognized.
Why It Matters
Sanctioning isn’t just a label, it brings real benefits:
- Insurance coverage for athletes, coaches, and volunteers
- Promotion on NTSSA’s social media, calendar, and website
- Safe Sport guidance and risk management support
- Official recognition for results, awards, and athlete development pathways
- Partnerships with Territorial Sport Organizations (TSOs)
- Administrative support, registration tools, and event planning guidance
Who’s Involved?
Sanctioned events are a team effort. Here’s how we all contribute:
- NTSSA: Oversees administration, risk management, funding support, marketing, and Safe Sport policies.
- TSOs: Provide sport-specific expertise, officials, and rules.
- Communities/Schools: Host the events, provide facilities, organize volunteers, and celebrate local spirit.
Tiers of Support
To recognize different levels of collaboration, sanctioned events are grouped into three tiers:
- Tier 1 – NTSSA 100% NTSSA leads all aspects (admin, funding, logistics, media).
- Tier 2 – NTSSA 50% Shared responsibilities with the community/TSO.
- Tier 3 – NTSSA 10% Local or TSO-led, with NTSSA providing light promotional support.

Why Sanctioning is More Than a Process
At its heart, a sanctioned event reflects our shared values: Safe environments, empowered youth, and a strong school sport community.
It’s how we build continuity, recognize achievement, and create lasting memories for students across the territory. So whether you’re stepping onto the court, lacing up for a run, or cheering from the sidelines, if it’s a sanctioned event, you know you’re in good hands.
